Flock To State

Madison's Central Business Improvement District is proud to be partnering with the City of Madison to present programming and events to activate the 400 to 600 blocks of State Street for a Pedestrian Mall. We’re experimenting with a more pedestrian-oriented approach, with the 400, 500 and 600 blocks being transformed with community-driven art, new furniture and events to get people to Flock to State!

Stay tuned to this page for a detailed calendar of programming and events that will be free and open to the public, featuring a mix of live music, art, wellness, retail-themed events and family fun!

#FlockToState
The plastic pink flamingo is the City’s official bird, with a long tradition on nearby Bascom Hill. This inspired the art and visual elements of Flock to State. Flock to State features the work of five local artists and hundreds of volunteer painters that left their mark on State Street. More information about the artist is available on their websites and socials: Maeve Makielski , Jessica Gutierrez , Taylor McAda , Sharon Bjyrd , Rahul Kamath

Traffic restrictions
Traffic will be further restricted on State Street this summer. After 3:00 pm on weekdays and 10:00 am on weekends, non-emergency vehicles are prohibited on State Street between Gorham Street and Hawthorne Court.

Tell us what you think!
The State Street Pedestrian Mall experiment is underway, and the City of Madison wants to know your thoughts! The Common Council only authorized the pedestrian mall experiment for this summer. Your responses will help determine if the pedestrian mall should return in 2025 and what could be done differently to improve the experience for everyone!
