Crafting Quality and Community Since the 1970s
Humble Beginnings
The Soap Opera’s story began in the 1970s, when art students Chuck Bauer and Chuck Beckwith opened a small cart on Library Mall. Inspired by the charm of European boutiques, they set out to create a place where high-quality soaps and personal care items could shine outside traditional drugstores. Both had grown up internationally, where small specialty shops were part of everyday life, and they wanted to bring that same sense of discovery to Madison. Their cart quickly stood out in an era when retail options were limited, offering something fresh, personal, and ahead of its time.
A State Street Classic
The Soap Opera moved into its permanent home at 319 State Street in 1982, where the cozy atmosphere and custom perfume-making experience remain beloved traditions. After more than four decades at the helm, Bauer and Beckwith retired, passing the business to current owner Stacey Scannell in 2016. Under her leadership, the store continues to evolve with a focus on sustainability, including the popular in-store Refill Station that helps keep bottles out of landfills. Earlier this year, The Soap Opera proudly celebrated its 53rd anniversary—proof this downtown gem is still bubbling with life.
