Downtown Historical Walking Tour - Goodman's Jewelers

Goodman's Jewelers

220 State St.
Providing the Highest Quaity & Care for Over 90 Years

Where It Began

The story of Madison’s oldest full-service jewelry store begins, improbably, with a track meet. In the early 1930s, a young athlete named Irwin Goodman was visiting Madison for an event when he spotted a jewelry store for sale on State Street. His parents purchased it not long after, and once Irwin and his brother Bob graduated, they took the reins. Formally established in 1933, Goodman’s Jewelers has remained in its original location ever since, building a reputation for over 90 years not just on fine jewelry, but on a foundation of community trust and warm service passed down from the very beginning.

Continued Excellence

The Goodman brothers’ legacy was passed into caring hands in 1998 when they sold the store to John Hayes, a long-time and trusted employee. For over 25 years, John has expertly guided the business, honoring its classic traditions while ensuring it evolves to meet modern tastes. He has maintained the warm, boutique feel and friendly reputation that make the store a local treasure. John ensures that Goodman’s remains a downtown icon where history, integrity, and world-class service continue to shine, just two blocks from the Capitol.
